Sambor Prei Kuk



Date : Early 7th century Religion: Hindu Buddhist Reign : Isanavarman Style : Sambor Prei kuk About 30km from Kompong Thom are the pre Angkorian ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk. These temples were built in a time when Cambodia was still split into small, powerful king-doms. It is most of what remains of one of these kingdoms: Tchenla.

This may have been for defensive reasons Jayavarman II died at Roluos in about 850 but it i5 likely his successors remained there unti Yasovarman I moved the capital to Yasodharapurz (Angkor) in around 905. Bakheng was the first temple built at Angkor and was Yasovarman'E state temple. The Roluos group dates from the late 9th century and is the earliest site of the 60C year Angkorian Period that is open to visitors. The three temples in this important group have similar architectural characteristics, decoration anc construction methods. They are well worth visitinc to guage the advances in classical Khmer art anc to put Khmer later monuments in their probe' context.
